Research and insights
Find the truth that makes an idea worth making.

What it means
Research and insights turns observations into a useful decision. Research collects evidence about people, a category and a business. An insight explains a tension that evidence reveals: something an audience wants but cannot easily find, express or experience. A trend report is an input; the strategic choice it changes is the output.
Why a CMO invests in it
For a CMO, the value is better allocation of attention and budget. Understanding a community before approaching it can reveal credible collaborators, the right language and the barriers a campaign must overcome. Research also gives a team a shared basis for choosing between competing creative routes.

BASF R-M — The Code
Creative Programme, Participant Curation
View the full project ↗The documented case
With BASF’s premium paint brand R-M, TheArsenale created The Code, a colour and design programme connecting independent makers across Europe. Twelve selected designers and engineers were invited to develop individual projects using R-M paints.
TheArsenale curated participants from different creative and technical backgrounds, including Lucky Cat Garage, Von Zadig, KISKA, Caresto, Death Spray Custom and Garage Italia Customs.
The programme gave each maker room to explore colour through their own practice, with the projects brought together across a dedicated website and social media channels.
The marketing lesson
BASF R-M’s The Code is a useful lens on specialist communities. Its documented programme invited twelve selected designers and engineers to work with paint. The marketing lesson is to study what makers actually do with a material before deciding how to talk about it. Their practice offers a more specific creative starting point than a generic claim about innovation. The published case documents curation, rather than a separate formal research study.
What do we understand about this audience that a competitor’s brief would miss?
What the work produces
Stakeholder interviews; audience and category review; cultural opportunity map; evidence-led creative brief.
The exact scope is defined for each brief; this is a practical guide to the discipline.
What to measure
Track which decisions the research changes, test whether the audience recognises the proposed tension, and compare the relevance of different messages before production. Research quality is not the number of presentation slides.
These are suggested evaluation criteria, not reported results for the case above.
